Second half goals send Truman to second straight Region 4 championship
CHICAGO, ILL. - One year after winning the school's first Region 4 title, the men's soccer team from Harry S. Truman College has delivered another after a 3-1 victory over Malcolm X College in the 2024 Region 4 Division I Men's Soccer Tournament Championship. The Falcons broke a 1-1 tie with a pair of second half goals and earn Maciej Orlowski his second consecutive Region 4 Coach of the Year accolade. (Box Score | Truman Recap)
Oskar Ogieniewski gave Truman College a 1-0 lead in the first half with a 28' goal; however, the Hawks netted the equalizer in the 33' when Mustafa Abdou converted a pass from Alex Alvarez. The score remained tied until the 78' when Michael Makonese set up Gabriel Vidaurre for the go-ahead goal. Makonese added some breathing room with a goal of his own in the 85' on an assist from Jair Duenas.
Goalkeeper Elio Di Gennaro made two saves for the Falcons, while Pedro Arteaga came up with 11 saves for the Hawks. Harry S. Truman College posted a 22-2 advantage in total shots and an 18-1 lead in shots on goal.
The Falcons (9-4-4) advanced to the NJCAA Midwest District Tournament and will play at Lewis & Clark Community College in a semifinal on Thursday, November 7 at noon in Godfrey, Illinois. Lewis & Clark CC is currently ranked #15 in the latest NJCAA Division I Poll.
